Protection from Evil doesn't really distinguish between good and evil, it's plain +2 AC and saves. At least in Classic, not sure if that was fixed in EE.

Just to clarify something about Writhing Fog - it seemed to me that it bypassed (minor) Globe of Invulnerability? I think the mages in Caelar's room were affected even while protected.
